For Research Department III - Transformation Pathways - PIK is offering a Post-doctoral position or Research Analyst postion (m/f/d) (Position number: 19-2024 PostDoc or Research Analyst) in the field of energy systems modeling for transport decarbonization pathways, starting preferably in August 2024. This position focuses on the refined modeling of the transport transition in the context of the decarbonization of global energy systems. How can transport systems be transformed in line with national and international climate neutrality goals? What is the role of the transport sector in an integrated energy systems context? Which technologies will prevail and what infrastructure will be needed and when? What are suitable policy approaches for the transport transition? If these questions pique your interest and if you enjoy collaborative programming in an international team, this position is right for you. As a valuable member of our team, your task is to further advance our detailed transport model (EDGE-Transport). The model represents national and international passenger and freight transport and is coupled to the REMIND model, one of the world's leading global integrated energy-economy climate models. We encourage candidates at the postdoc level to apply. Filling the position as a scientific researcher with a successfully completed university degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) is equally possible. The position is initially funded for two years. Extensions are envisaged and rely on new external funding. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13 This is a full-time position with a weekly working time of 40 hours per week. The position can be filled on a part-time basis. Key responsibilities Analyze the mobility transition within global, European and German energy transformation pathways, covering policies, technologies and behavioral developments Further refine our model dynamics and subsectoral coverage, e.g. of the aviation or shipping sector Validate our model against newly published empirical data Contribute to the development of the integrated assessment modeling framework REMIND, in which EDGE-Transport is embedded Publish your results in renowned scientific journals and present them at international conferences Requirements Master's Degree or PhD in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Transport Science or a related field Excellent programming skills, e.g. in R or Python Demonstrated expertise in software engineering and management of open source software projects and knowledge of Git and GitHub is a plus Excellent analytical skills and interest in theoretical and applied modeling We expect Capacity to collaborate in a team, while progressing independently with own responsibilities Structured, goal-oriented thinking and clear communication Capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics Creativity and openness to new approaches Reliability and a high level of motivation A high level of competence in oral and written English Willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.) We offer the chance to be part of a creative, interdisciplinary team a stimulating working environment in an internationally recognized research institute on Potsdam's beautiful, historic Telegrafenberg campus, a short commuting distance from Berlin flexitime and mobile working (up to 40% of your hours) a collective pay scheme and associated benefits, as well as a subsidized travel card PIK values equality and diversity.
