About the Role

Join the Quantum Nanophysics Team (QNP) at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Markus Arndt. The group explores the boundaries between quantum and classical physics, as well as quantum and biomolecular science. Core research areas include:

  • Universal matter-wave interferometry with high-mass and complex systems (organic molecules, metal clusters, nanoparticles)
  • Quantum sensing, mass spectrometry, and biomolecular chemistry
  • Levitated optomechanics, particle beam methods, and laser technology

The team is part of the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (qAustria), the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), and the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ). You will work within the Q4-BIO project, pioneering quantum tools and physics with neutral biomolecules—developing cold beam sources, quantum detectors, coherent beam splitters, and investigating spin physics and quantum delocalization in complex molecules. The experiment will relocate to a new dedicated laboratory in 2027.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Active participation in the Q4-BIO research project
  • Development and submission of a research plan and dissertation agreement within 12–18 months (reviewed annually)
  • Independent work toward completing a PhD dissertation within 4 years
  • Contribution to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) as per collective bargaining agreement
  • Administrative tasks supporting the group’s research, teaching, and self-organization
  • Continuous engagement with state-of-the-art developments in the field
  • Outreach through publications, conference presentations, and public activities

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Diploma in Physics (or equivalent qualification enabling PhD enrollment at the University of Vienna) completed before start date
  • Extensive hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Molecular beam sources
    • (Cryogenic) ultra-high-vacuum systems
    • Superconducting nanowire detectors
    • Advanced optics, laser systems, and frequency conversion
    • Mass spectrometry or matter-wave research
  • Demonstrable skills in experimental design, construction, and laboratory troubleshooting
  • Excellent written and spoken English
