Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in the Social Sciences

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies, aiming to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political foundations of modern economies. Its research program combines new economic sociology with comparative and international political economy.

The Research Group on Technology and Statehood, directed by Prof. (UiB) Dr. Regine Paul, investigates how states pursue technological competitiveness, the variations across time, space, and technologies, and the implications of global tech races. Research topics may include:

• Public governance of and with artificial intelligence stacks
• Quantum computing and communication infrastructures
• Digital twins in public administration

Empirical projects in decolonized contexts (e.g., Brazil, India) are particularly encouraged.

Tasks & Responsibilities

• Develop and conduct an independent research project within the group’s focus over a two-year contract.
• Contribute to the intellectual life of the MPIfG through active participation in its research community.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in the social sciences, completed no more than three years before the starting date (exceptions may apply).
• Scholarly excellence and a compelling research proposal (up to three pages) aligned with the group’s themes.
• Collaborative and collegial approach to research.
