Master Thesis - Design of active & passive temperature monitoring capabilities for solid target irradiation on accelerators

At the Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management - Plasma Physics (IFN-1), Forschungszentrum Jülich, proton irradiation is being investigated as a surrogate to emulate fusion neutron damage in first-wall materials.

Join the team of the END-USE project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) where you will be responsible for improving the design, modelling and testing of an active temperature measurement system on the solid accelerator target irradiation station.

Your Job:

The thesis includes:

  • Improving the design and efficiency of temperature measurement on the low-current target
  • Using drafting and simulation tools such as CATIA and ANSYS
  • Assembling and testing the sample holder
  • Further design of a passive solution for high current target applications

Your Profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a Master’s program in engineering, physics, or a closely related field
  • Interest in the field of materials and work across disciplines including part design
  • Willingness to work in radiation areas
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the CEFR), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level

Our Offer:

  • Meaningful Tasks: Your thesis deals with a future-oriented, socially relevant topic with direct practical relevance in an international environment
